“I STILL CAN’T FIGURE OUT how it got into my purse.”

Stuffing his cell phone into his pocket, Sam glanced at the necklace that was now lying spread out in a circle on the glass-topped coffee table. Multicolored gems were caught in whisper-thin twists and loops of gold. Unable to help himself, he picked it up to examine it more closely and sank onto the sofa next to A.J. The necklace was lighter than he would have thought. The pure artistry of the craftsmanship had fascinated him from the first moment he’d seen it in the case at the museum. It was a piece that might tempt the most reformed thief out of retirement.

“The how is easy,” Sam said as he set the necklace back on the table. “Pierre used to do all sorts of sleight of hand tricks to amuse me when I visited his club as a child. I think he may have been a pickpocket before he went after bigger prizes. The when is trickier.” He’d given it some thought while he poured them both more wine. And he’d been turning it over in his mind while he called the detective handling the kidnapping and updating him on the ransom call. Then he’d left a message with his brother Andrew’s paging service. “I’m betting Pierre slipped the necklace into your purse after that pickup truck nearly ran both of you down.”

A.J shook her head. “No. When I first raised my head and saw his face, I thought he might be dead. He was definitely out cold for a few minutes.”

“What about during those few minutes when neither one of us was paying any attention to him?” Sam could still recall exactly what had happened when he’d held her hand and looked into her eyes. Time had ceased to exist and his whole world had narrowed to her.

Suddenly, he frowned. “Hell, that was the second time you made me lose track of everything. The first time was when you came striding down the street toward me in that skirt. I felt as if I’d been struck by lightning. I never even saw that bearded guy pull the knife.”

Shifting his gaze, he focused his whole attention on the skirt. She was sitting in the corner of the couch, her legs tucked under her, and the skirt had once more inched its way intriguingly up her thighs. It was clearly going to be the death of him.

Reaching out, he captured the edge of the hem and rubbed it between his fingers. The texture was soft and silky smooth, a hint of what her skin might feel like. He was tempted to lower his hand, just a whisper, and test his assumption when something in the dark fabric caught hold of the light and shimmered. Sam felt a tingling heat, not unlike a low-level electrical current, shoot up his arm.

“There’s definitely something about this skirt. I told you I had some experience with it before,” he added, keeping his voice even. The tingling sensation was gone, but he couldn’t release his hold on the thin, silky material.
